Free Pattern: Hogwarts House Cowl

Want to show off your house colors while exploring the muggle world, but find your house scarf too heavy for the occasion?  Or maybe you are just crazy about cowls and want to give your knitting wands a little work out.  Either way, this cowl will keep you as warm as you work your magic!  ;)

Materials
Yarn:  Malabrigo Sock (100% merino, 440 yd per 100 g ball) in "Tiziano Red" (MC) and "Ochre" (CC), 1 skein each for Gryffindor;  Madelinetosh tosh sock (100% merino, 395 yd per 100 g ball) in "Butter" (MC) and "Cloak" (CC), 1 skein each for Hufflepuff

(I haven't made my Ravenclaw or Slytherin cowls yet, but I'll update my color choices as I make them!  As long as you use a fingering or light fingering weight yarn with at least 390-ish yards, I think you'll be good to go!)

Needles:  US Size 5/3.75 mm, 16" circular or DPNs or size needed to achieve gauge

Gauge:  24 sts and 34 rows in 4" stockinette

Notions:  Yarn needle, stitch marker, and waste yarn

Directions
With your preferred method, provisionally CO 90 sts using MC and waste yarn.  Place marker and join in the round.
Rnds 1-4:  k all in MC
Rnds 5-9:  k all in CC
Rnds 10-14:  k all in MC
Rnds 15-19:  k all in CC

Knit 30 rounds in MC.  Knit 5 rounds in CC.  Knit 5 rounds in MC.  Knit 5 rounds in CC.

Repeat bolded line three more times.  (You should have a total of 5 sets of CC bands at this point.)

Knit 25 rounds in MC.

Undo the provisional cast-on and slip the resulting live sts onto a needle.  Kitchener graft the ends together with MC.

Weave in ends and block gently.  Enjoy!

  3. I haven't made mine yet, but I have purchased the yarn! I bought some Madeline Tosh Sock in Deep and Pecan. I've love to see yours if you make one! :)
